It was used during WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War by the U.S. along with other countries. Present-day most 1919’s that are being used have been converted to use 7.62 NATO rounds.
The belts started as cloth and later moved to the M1 link making it a disintegrating belt. It fires from a closed bolt as opposed to the standard open bolt of other machine guns. During sustained fire, operators encounter ‘cook-offs’ where rounds will go off without pulling the trigger, so controlled bursts are best. Variations were produced for crew-served, coaxial, mounted, aircraft, and anti-aircraft from A1 to A6, T66, .30AN/M2, 303 Mark II, and M37. The 1919 A4 is considered to be the little brother to the iconic M2 50 cal.
